The first tool needed for our young leaders to create the competitive advantage is Exposure. They must discover their purpose. They must identify the motivation to achieve their purpose. They must observe the process to accomplish that purpose. And they must connect with people who can mentor them in pursuit of that purpose.
The second tool our young leaders must utilize to create the competitive advantage is Direction. Those who know where they want to eventually arrive, but lack a map that shows how to get there, will most likely arrive somewhere else. We have to help them develop the process that will ensure completion of their purpose.
Undoubtedly, the most important tool necessary to create the competitive advantage is Excellence. Each year, as we take young leaders through the Alabama EDGE Playbook, we work for them to see, hear, observe, and interact with Excellence, in hopes that they each will voluntarily adopt excellence as their personal standard and expectation. We believe at our core that excellence is not only a tool to create the competitive edge, but also a powerful weapon in the fight for the very survival of our community.
